  • December 11, 2008, Cathy Welsh will be a presenter at a seminar sponsored by the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce entitled, Wake Up Virginia – How Proposed Changes to Federal Labor Law Would Dramatically Increase Unions in Virginia. The seminar will be held at Blue Ridge Community College and will assist Virginia employers in understanding the effects of the Employee Free Choice Act and what they should be doing now to prevent and/or prepare for its passage.
  • December 11, 2008, Jeff Lenhart has been invited by the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce to participate in a panel discussion of health care experts to address issues facing the health care industry.
  • December 16, 2008, Cathy Welsh will give a presentation in Winchester to the Blue Ridge Association of Realtors regarding “Employment Law Issues for Small Businesses.”
  • March 11, 2009, Cathy Welsh will be presenting a Legislative Update regarding the ADA Amendments Act and new FMLA regulations to the Shenandoah Valley Society for Human Resource Management.

  • October 28, 2008 Cathy Welsh participated in a panel discussion sponsored by the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) regarding the Employee Free Choice Act which would radically alter labor relations in Virginia.
  • September 29, 2008, Cathy Welsh taught a Labor Relations PHR/SPHR Prep class for the Shenandoah Valley Society for Human Resource Management at Bridgewater College.
  • September 18, 2008, Nancy Schlichting spoke to the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce’s Business Women’s Roundtable on “Effective Negotiating.”
  • September 11, 2008, Cathy Welsh spoke at Augusta Medical Center to a group of local hospital HR and Employee Health Managers regarding ADA, FMLA and Workers’ Compensation.
  • August 27, 2008, Cathy Welsh participated in a panel discussion on “Workforce Issues in a Slumping Economy” at National College sponsored by the Issues Committee of the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Welsh discussed what legal issues arise and cause employers the most difficulty in this type of economic environment. Ms. Welsh touched on immigration, discrimination, wage and hour issues as well as properly handling layoffs and terminations.
  • August 1, 2008, John Flora, Jeff Lenhart and Mark Obenshain have been included in the 2008 “Virginia Super Lawyers” listing by Law & Politics & Richmond magazine. Jennifer Shirkey has been named as a “Rising Star” by the same publications.  [Read Press Release]
  • July 11, 2008, Cathy Welsh presented a seminar for the Harrisonburg Rockingham Chamber of Commerce Business Smarts program entitled Avoiding Legal Landmines in Your Daily Business.
  • July 1, 2008, Jeff Lenhart became President of the Harrisonburg Rockingham Bar Association after having been elected to the office earlier in the year. John Cale assumed the role of Treasurer of the Bar Association on the same date.
  • June 2, 2008, Jennifer Shirkey introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Arthur C. Brooks, to a special meeting of all of the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Rotary Clubs and the Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County held at JMU’s Festival Conference and Student Center.
  • May 21, 2008, Jennifer Shirkey was named Vice President of The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. 
  • May 15, 2008, Nancy R. Schlichting was a presenter at a Project Manager Seminar sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of Virginia, Inc. in Charlottesville. The title of her presentation was “Handling Subcontractor Defaults” and she assisted contractors in developing strategies to contain and limit financial and business disruption due to potential subcontractor defaults in a tightening economy.
  • May 12, 2008, Cathy Welsh was the keynote speaker for the Harrisonburg Rotary Club’s Code of Ethics program at JMU’s Festival Conference and Student Center.
  • May 9, 2008, John W. Flora was elected to the board of Shenandoah Telecommunications Co. in Edinburg. Shentel is a holding company that provides telecommunications services through a dozen operating subsidiaries.
  • April 8, 2008, Cathy Welsh gave a Legislative Update to the Shenandoah Valley Society for Human Resources at Blue Ridge Community College. Her presentation focused on new proposed FMLA regulations and any state legislation affecting employers arising out of the 2008 General Assembly Session.
  • March 29, 2008, Cathy Welsh moderated and presented at an employment law seminar hosted by Blue Ridge Community College regarding ADA/FMLA & EEOC/Affirmative Action.
  • March 19, 2008, Cathy Welsh moderated and presented at an employment law seminar hosted by Blue Ridge Community College regarding the FLSA & Immigration. 
  • December 11, 2007, Jennifer Shirkey was a speaker for the Shenandoah Valley SHRM Chapter's December meeting discussing year end checklist items for employers' benefit plans.

  • September 19, 2007, Jennifer Shirkey participated as guest expert on a teleseminar entitled "Employee Benefit Trends for Nonprofit Organizations". The teleseminar was presented in conjunction with Changing The World LIVE and Universal Synergy Consulting.

  • May 8, 2007, Cathy Welsh facilitated the Healthy Community Summit II, hosted at VMRC.  This summit took the indicators and themes identified in the Summit on March 6, 2006 and built consensus on community priorities for the future.

  • April 23, 2007, Cathy Welsh co-presented at a seminar entitled Human Resource Issues for the Non-Profit Institute, a professional development program for non-profit managers, created in collaboration with the Harrisonburg - Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, the Harrisonburg Rockingham United Way, JMU and the Small Business Development Center.

  • March 22, 2007, Suzanne Thomas spoke on the topic of Eminent Domain at a meeting of the Augusta County Republican Woman.

  • March 21, 2007, Cathy Welsh spoke to the Winchester Area Society for Human Resource Management, You Never Really Know Your Friends from Your Enemies Until the ICE Breaks.   Dealing with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can leave employers feeling a chill.  This presentation discussed an employer's responsibilities and recommended actions when confronted with immigration issues.

  • March 14, 2007, Jeffrey G. Lenhart was elected to serve as President-Elect of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Association for 2007-2008.  Suzanne F. Thomas was elected to serve as Treasurer of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Association for 2007-2008.

  • March 6, 2007, Cathy Welsh moderated/facilitated a community summit at which the 3rd Health of the Community Report was presented. Every five years, the Healthy Community Council conducts an extensive survey and compiles the data into a report which provides insights into key areas of our community, including; education, health and well-being, natural resources, youth and the economy. The Summit showed the community trends and key indicators and analysis of this information assisted in the creation of actions plans to ensure the best quality of life possible for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
